ESL 084Life in Refugee CampBy Yean Pich
the Vietnamese Army kicked out Khmer Rouge from Cambodia, I fled to find countries that had the freedom and self-government. Because my country had been governed by the Vietnamese Army, I held it against them. I decided to move to the Thai-border. There were lots of refugees who lived in the camp, such as Cambodians, Vietnamese, Loatian and Hmoang. All of them lived in a different section. The refugees had authority to apply to the coutry that they wanted to live in. The countries that needed the refugees were France, Australia, Japan, and the U.S.A. Life in the Thai-Camp: The refugees must stay inside the barrier. They did not go out. They lived like the parrot in a cage. Some refugees did not have relatives from third countries. They decided to trespass out of the fence. Sometime they had luck, but the most unlucky day was if the Thai soldiers caught them. Then, they had a problem. They got punishment or put in the jail. But I was the luckiest man in the world. In the camp, I was a teacher. I taught the kids in three languages: English, French and Cambodian. And if I got a little money, I was happy in my life. Finally, I really appreciated The United Nations and Thailand who helped the refugees in the world with such things as food, clothes, and medicines, and shelter. Now, my family and I have lived in the country that gives us the freedom and liberty in our hand. My dream becomes true. |
